Peter Bloechl
I was born in Zeltweg in 1961 and trained in electrical engineering in Kapfenberg. In 1983, I started my career as a commissioning engineer, working with systems such as SIMATIC S5, COROS and TELEPERM M, in paper mills and pulp plants in Finland, Sweden, Germany, Malaysia and the USA. Site work teaches lessons that cannot be learned at a drawing board.
One question has accompanied me throughout my career:
Will the line run when it is supposed to?
In my experience, that question is rarely answered during commissioning. The outcome is determined much earlier, when the scope is defined, interfaces are clarified, and suppliers are selected. It is also determined later, when engineering, suppliers and contractors must work together on site under schedule pressure.
Over four decades, I have seen both sides of that challenge: as a commissioning engineer bringing new production lines into operation, and as an executive with global responsibility for Electrical & Automation in the metals industry. Most recently, as Vice President Global Metals Automation, I was responsible for sales, project management, engineering, erection and commissioning worldwide.
Today, I work as an independent consulting engineer, supporting plant builders and operators with the same objective that has guided me since my first start-up:
To ensure that the line runs when it is supposed to.
Being independent has one practical advantage. I am tied to neither suppliers nor plant builders and can therefore provide advice based solely on what I consider technically and commercially right.
